Ballet Dance

Dance has had  it’s existence from the beginning of time. The dance style or form known as ballet,  which is a professional work of art which was intended for stage had its origins in the French court of Henry III and his mother, Catherine de Medicis, when in 1581, the Ballet Comique de la royne (reine) was created to celebrate the marriage of the Queen’s sister. This was the first genuine ballet de cour (count ballet), an elaborate pantomime spectacle showing the fable of Circe and performed by courtiers. Each ballet dance was an adaptation of court dances at that time. Precursors of this dramatic type of dance had already existed in Italy, a notable example being the elaborate court pantomime dance of  1489, which was based on the myths of Jason and the Argonauts, Diana, and so on, to celebrate the marriage Gian Galeazzo Sforza, Duke Of Milan, to Isabella of Aragon. Such entertainment continued for a hundred years, reaching their peak, during the reign of Louis XIV, who...

The Choreographer

Many times we go ‘wow’ , when we watch a well choreographed dance performance either in a music video or on stage. And we often wonder: ‘how did they dance so uniquely and uniformly?’ Well, that’s the work of the choreographer. The choreographer is one who creates and arranges dances and teaches dancers to perform a dance to the delight of an audience. He decides what the moves and steps will be and the dancers perform the steps. He or she also takes the ideas and opinions of the dancers, and blends them together to make a beautiful performance. Firstly, the choreographer directs rehearsals to teach dancers how to dance. These rehearsals are often intense and time consuming if dancers are going to master the steps to be able to present them uniformly. Secondly, he studies the dancers’ unique physical abilities and make up and brings into practice different steps and moves. Thirdly, he assesses each dancer’s ability and works with them to improve on their weaknesses. He also chooses the...

Choreography at Its Best

Choreography is the art of making and arrangement of dances. Choreography involves the detailed description of movements in space, time, energy and rhythm in dance or movements. Choreography is usually used to describe dances that are performed on stages and concerts. The movements in choreography vary and are calculatingly repeated. Now, the principles of choreography are order, beauty and variety. First of all, order is the proper sequence and arrangement of performers during choreography. The performers or dancers are relatively lined up by order as designed by the choreographer. Secondly, beauty is a principle that combines body movement to give pleasure to the sight of the audience. This concept satisfies and elates the senses. It should also be beautifully arranged and should be performed in a rythimical style. The last but not the least principle is variety. This cannot however be overemphasized as too much repetition of dance steps can make the presentation loose its color and ...

Dynamics of Contemporary Dance

I’m passionate about a lot of things: books, the environment, and the culinary arts. Another passion I have is dancing. I love to watch well choreographed dance presentations and also love to be a part of them. I actually choreographed a dance group back in college and it was so much fun dancing on stage to trending songs then like Kirk Franklin’s “Stomp” and “Revolution”. We became so famous for our unique dance steps that we were invited to almost every Christian program on campus. I still dance especially when I hear good Christian hip hop vibes, and thanks to rap stars in the Christian community who write, rap and sing lyrics that you move your body to without guilt or condemnation. Anyway, this week we are going to be looking at contemporary dance. Now, contemporary dance is modern dance which has been a gradual departure over the centuries from the traditional and ballet dance but draws inspiration from them. This is a free style type of dance which uses body movement not bound b...

The Origin of Dance

T he origin of dance lies in the ancient human past. Just like birds and animals danced for mating, so it was then. The duet of mating and the need for communal expression were probably the two earliest motivations that brought on dance. The fight of two male animals for a female, for example, has its counterpart in the wedding festivities of certain Bedouins, which include a sword dance between two men. In ancient times, the Plains Indians had dance movements of the wolf, antelope, buffalo and the beaver in their lodge ceremonies. The delicate butterfly is the object of a Samoan dance, and in Japan this creature is depicted with great beauty in the Kabuki drama.   In Central America Aztec dancing rituals can still be traced. Among the Israelites, there were sacred processional encircling, ecstatic (trancelike), festival, victory, wedding and funeral dances for the rites of circumcision, which still do exist today in Africa and Australia. Greek gods (such as Apollo, Ares, D...
